ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN SOUTH CAMPUS RECEIVES 2006 AIACC DESIGN AWARD

IBE Consulting Engineers congratulate Daly Genik Architects for the receipt of an Honor Award from the AIA California Council for the design of the Art Center College of Design South Campus Project for which IBE provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design consultancy services.

Art Center College of Design is recognized internationatlly to be one of the premier design schools in the US with the original facility located in nearby Linda Vista Hills in Pasadena. The president of the school, who envisions the college as a kind of 21st-century Bauhaus with a social agenda, began an ambitious plan to develop a satellite campus near the center of Pasadena’s downtown.

Renovated from its original use as an industrial wind tunnel and support buildings, this 90,000 square foot building provides space for the esteemed Graduate Fine Arts Program and encompasses digital design and model-making, photography, film, painting, drawing, wood shops, letterpress, galleries, small and large work studios, and a 16,000 square foot flexible performance/exhibit space. The 24-hour facility is also used by the school throughout the day for their wide range of community and public education programming.

The building is among the first in Pasadena to be granted LEED® certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the U.S. Green Building Council, which works to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work.

IBE acknowledges the team effort of the architects and engineers on this project. High design standards were met by a collaborative process shared by the team and common goals for quality and efficiency. John Gautrey and Alan Locke, the partners at IBE also acknowledge their team of engineers who are continually pushing the barriers of conventional design to explore concepts that provide advancements in cost effective sustainable design.
