IBE Consulting Engineers provided mechanical design services
for this 150,000 SF activities and recreation center on the campus
of UC Davis. The project was completed in May 2004.
The building includes multiple large volume spaces such as a
gymnasium which is sized to support 4 basketball courts and a
multipurpose activities center (MAC) which can be used for indoor
soccer. A 30 foot climbing wall plus cardio machines are located in common spaces and corridors. A banquet hall, sandwich bar,
and grille provide food services for the building.
The lobby is two stories with a barrel shaped roof and exposed ductwork. Ductwork is also exposed in the gym, the multiuse activities
center, the lobby, and many of the corridor / transitional spaces.
The project contains seven separate air handling systems and ten
exhaust fans which are located on the multilevel roofs. Cooling
and heating is provided by connections to the campus chilled
water and steam systems. The building uses two separate steam
systems to hot water heat exchanger systems, which generates
heating hot water for HVAC system and domestic hot water for the
showers and plumbing fixtures.
The building HVAC system is highly automated to maintain
internal temperatures whilst minimizing energy use. The gym and
MAC are constant volume and all other systems are VAV with
reheat. |
